Shitara Shunzan studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Kawamura Taizan. He graduated from the NHK Japanese Music Skills Development Association and passed the NHK Japanese Music Audition. He won the gold prize and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Encouragement Award at the Tozan-ryū Honkyoku Competition National Tournament. A Tozan-ryu Dai-Shihan (Grand Master), he is a member of the Associate Instructor certification committee, a member of the Taizan-kai, and a member of the Japanese Sankyoku Association. Shitara is also a performing member of the Yamamoto Hōzan Shakuhachi Ensemble, a member of Mutsuno, an Ensemble Ambience Artist, and a member of Monogatari Theater. In addition to performing, he also works on music for many plays and storytelling.
